HOW DOES EOSINOPHILIC ESOPHAGITIS PROGRESS?

The long-term prognosis of EoE is not yet completely clear. Nevertheless, much of the evidence suggests that EoE is a progressive disorder. This means that if it is left untreated, the condition can have an increasingly severe impact on patients’ quality of life. The oesophagus often continues to constrict over the years (reducing its diameter), and scarring may occur due to the persistent inflammation. EoE is a chronic disease for which there is currently no cure, but, with the right treatment, the progression of the condition can be slowed, arrested and even reversed in some cases.

Left untreated, EoE will progress with possible narrowing and scarring of the oesophagus. Complications, such as obstruction of the oesophagus, can have a significant impact on patients’ quality of life.
