TREATMENT OF EOSINOPHILIC ESOPHAGITIS WITH PROTON PUMP INHIBITORS

How effective are PPIs in the treatment of EoE?

Only some EoE patients respond to treatment with proton pump inhibitors (PPI). These medicines suppress the secretion of gastric acid and are approved for the treatment of heartburn and stomach ulcers, but not EoE. Any effect in EoE patients is probably not due to inhibition of acid secretion, but possibly due to an effect on the immune function in the oesophageal wall. As long as there are no clinical trials comparing the treatment with placebo no more specific statements can be made. That also means that there is only limited information available with regards to how long treatment should last.

What are the side effects/limitations of using proton pump inhibitors?

Proton pump inhibitors are considered relatively safe. The most common side effects include headaches, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhoea, flatulence, nausea/vomiting and a type of benign polyp developing in the stomach (fundic gland polyp).
